Herd Wired A Must

"Herd Wired should be required reading for anyone who engages horses! Thanks for being an equine ally, Kerry!" Lissa Pohl ~ Equine Assisted Learning Expert

Herd Wired

"The first time I met Kerry was at Sutton Forrest, Australia on his first tour to the land down under. 15 minutes into his first lecture, I could tell he had the answers I needed. I'm 52, I've been riding since I was 4 and actively studying all things Horse for over 30 years. I've been studying Kerry's work for a couple of years now and this book, HERD WIRED, has in it the connection.

The thing that holds everything I've learned in my life so far about horses together. The WHY if you will. I've seen and done things that work and don't work with my horses, and through Kerry's lens, the WHY is taking shape into a clarity I've been searching for.

This book contains answers to questions I hadn't even formed in my own mind yet!! Do yourself a favour and get a copy of this book, HERD WIRED The Field guide, it will make the connection from theory to real world application seamless, as though Kerry is standing beside you guiding you into the horses mind. Just goes to show, a bloke wearing an Akubra hat is very often a great bloke, even if he comes from Pennsylvania!!

Thanks Kerry Thomas, keep up the great work."

Kerry nails it with this new book.

"Kerry nails it with this new book. Your horse has an operating system and "Herd Wired" is the owner's manual, a fascinating read for anyone who aspires to understand their equine friends from the hoofs up." ~ Mark Coomes former Louisville Courier-Journal Turf Writer

Herd Wired-In Pursuit of Discovery Review

My awakening began when my wife came home from a book signing she went to.  Girls night out? It was late and she said “I got you something”. I did not pay too much attention. The next morning she was off to volunteer/steward at a local horse event. I was heading to the barn across the driveway to tend to our horses, make a trip to get hay and then back to mow fields.  Yes we are horse people and something most people don’t understand.

My horse experience in my younger days consisted of going to a local farm, paying $20.00 to hack out at the State Park for 2 hours and then jumping off and going home.  Really not learning anything about horsemanship nor understanding the creature that I was sitting on.  The true meaning of “what you don’t know you don’t know.  The one thing I do remember was having to hot walk my horse when we came back and not understanding why.

Eventually I reached a point much later in life where one realizes no more thinking about horses and learning to ride, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!  I just didn’t want to learn to ride but wanted to learn about the horse, all the how-to’s, grooming, feeding, their needs, etc.  Deep down I knew there was something not right about handing someone $20.00, jumping on and jumping off a random horse that was handed to me. I always felt guilty doing that.

Back to my awakening.  Later that day curiosity got the best of me and I looked in the bag she brought home from the book signing.  Hmmm, 2 copies of the book Herd Wired In Pursuit of Discovery by Kerry M Thomas.  One for each of us signed by the author.  Very cool!   Sat down and started reading and knew right away this was a book I had to read!  I had a work-related trip coming up and decided it would be the perfect time to read it on my flight.

Up until now I owe everything that I know to my wife who grew up with horses, Pony Club etc. What I never realized was once horses get in your blood it becomes your life. Depending on where we were boarding our horses, the mares and geldings were usually kept separate.  I watched with fascination the groups of horses in fields and their interactions, trying to figure out what I was looking at.  I knew that what I saw was at a very simplistic and superficial level. When we were able to have our horses with us 24 x7 it changed everything.  I really had to step up and try to understand the who’s who in the field, the key word was “TRY”.

The time came for my trip, book in hand and eager to get started reading.  The plane ride would be 4.5 hours.  Little did I know what would happen when I read Kerry’s book.  I walked off the plane not with thoughts of baggage claim, transportation nor a cold local microbrew but of the book I just read in its entirety.  I had just been wowed!  An epiphany, that aha moment.  Pieces of information that rambled in my head just came together about the horses in our field back home.  I knew I needed to read this again on my return flight home…..and I did.

What took time to sink in was Kerry’s unique perspective which he shares with the reader from the beginning.  His color blindness forced him to look at the herd differently.  It forced him to have a unique insight which he has shared in this book. Can you imagine looking at a group of horses and being colorblind.  Think about that the next time you see a herd of deer in the field at dusk.

He has compiled hours, days, weeks, months, years of observations into a book or what he calls a “Field Companion”.  Herd Wired is presented in an organized, easy to understand format. Kerry will walk you through a step-by-step approach to not just herd dynamics, but a better understanding of the behavioral and emotional languages.  Easy to read and easy to understand for anyone.  I can guarantee you will want to mark up the book for referencing later.

Kerry answered questions that I did not know I had. But it all makes sense!  I came home

determined to approach our horses and any horse I met in a different way.  My relationship is completely different now with our horses and I must say it’s for the better.  I realized many of my pre-existing interpretations of behaviors were completely wrong.

My wife and I have been lucky to have spent time with Kerry and his wife Daphne, trust me when I say this book was written with purpose from the heart.

If your passion is being an equestrian either professionally, as an amateur or at the hobby level, “Herd Wired In pursuit of Discovery” is a must read!  Heck the DMV makes you read a handbook before you drive, why should you not have to read this book before you ride a horse?

PS … I can promise you this. If you thought you were emotionally connected to your horse before, wait till you see the connection you can make with your horse or herd after you read this book!

For nearly three decades, Kerry has walked this road alone, building, teaching, and sharing the emotional and behavioral science that connects horses and humans at their deepest levels. What began as a personal calling has become a global movement, now recognized by the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation, universities, and equestrian professionals around the world.
