WHO IS THE HORSE?
Every horse lives in two worlds.
The world nature prepared them for.
And the world we've created for them.
For more than three decades, my life's work has been devoted to helping bridge those two worlds by exploring one simple, yet profoundly important question:
The Kerry M. Thomas Live Learning Series

Understanding Horses as Nature Created Them

Who Is The Horse?
Everything I do begins by taking a view from the hoof.
Before we ask the horse to understand our expectations, I believe we first have a responsibility to understand the horse—how they experience their environment, communicate with those around them, express their emotions, build relationships, and ultimately find their place within the world we have created for them.
Only then can we begin building a bridge strong enough to connect the horse, the human, and the relationship we hope to build together.
Whether I'm sharing ideas with a small group of horse lovers or speaking before an international audience, every presentation is simply another chapter in that journey.
Because the horse has never stopped being who nature created.
"The closer we move toward nature, the closer we come to understanding the horse." ~ Kerry M. Thomas
Choose Your Experience
No two audiences are exactly alike.
Neither are the conversations we share.
One of the things I enjoy most is working alongside event organizers to create educational experiences that feel natural, meaningful, and engaging for their audience.
Sometimes that means a keynote presentation.
Sometimes it's an interactive demonstration, a Masterclass, or a multi-day educational experience.
Sometimes the best ideas are the ones we create together.
Whether we're gathered in a conference hall, a university classroom, a riding arena, a breeding farm, a conservation setting, or simply sitting together around a campfire after a day spent with horses, the purpose remains the same:
No matter where we meet, the journey always begins in the same place: Bridging the Gap Between the Natural Herd Dynamic and the Domesticated World.

A Journey of Discovery
Every educational experience begins with one simple question: Who is the horse?
That question has guided my work for more than three decades, and it continues to shape every keynote, seminar, lecture, demonstration, Masterclass, clinic, and educational experience I have the privilege to share.
Together we explore how horses experience the world through the lens of nature, and how that understanding can strengthen communication, deepen partnership, improve welfare, and help us become more thoughtful caretakers of the horses who share our lives.
Because I believe the foundation of horse welfare is emotional wellness, and meaningful partnership begins with understanding before instruction.
Whether we're together for thirty minutes or several days, my hope is always the same: That you'll leave seeing the horse a little differently than when you arrived.

WHO IS THE HORSE?
Signature Series
A three-part educational journey designed to transform how we understand horses, partnership, and the relationship between nature and the domesticated world. Each presentation stands on its own while also forming part of a progressive learning experience. Together, they take audiences from asking "What does the horse do?" to understanding "Why does the horse experience the world as it does?" Ideal as a one-day intensive, a multi-day conference series, or a featured educational program with discussion and Q&A following each presentation. Then... PART ONE Who Is The Horse? Understanding Horses as Nature Created Them 30-minute Keynote A powerful opening presentation introducing the audience to a new way of seeing the horse, not through training methods or disciplines, but through nature's design. This keynote challenges long-held assumptions while inviting participants to begin viewing horses through the lens of evolution, behavior, and partnership. Recommended companion experience: Herd Wired: In Pursuit of Discovery Book Talk & Author Signing. PART TWO Life Through the Senses Understanding the Herd-Wired Mind 60–90 Minute Seminar How does the horse experience its world? This immersive seminar explores the horse's sensory operating system, perception, emotion, herd psychology, Behavioral Architecture, and the remarkable biological design that shapes every decision the horse makes. Participants leave with a deeper understanding of why horses behave as they do and why behavior is only the visible expression of a much larger story. PART THREE Be the Bridge Bridging the Gap Between the Natural Herd Dynamics and the Domesticated World 60–90 Minute Seminar Understanding creates responsibility. This concluding seminar brings the journey together by exploring how humans can create environments, relationships, and partnerships that honor the horse's natural design while helping it thrive within the domesticated world. Through concepts such as Environmental Fluency™, Behavioral Efficiency™, and Herd Dynamics™, participants discover practical ways to become the bridge between nature and modern horsemanship. Closing paragraph Together, these presentations form the Who Is The Horse? Signature Series—a progressive educational experience that invites audiences to rethink long-held assumptions, deepen their understanding of equine behavior and psychology, and build partnerships grounded in science, observation, and respect for the horse's lived experience. While each presentation may be offered independently, they are intentionally designed to complement one another and create a truly transformative learning journey.
Sensory Mapping Masterclass™
The Signature Experience within the Live Learning Series Some lessons are best learned from a chair. Others are learned by stepping into the arena. The Sensory Mapping Masterclass™ is an immersive educational experience that combines conversation, observation, practical arena exercises, collaborative learning, live coaching, and thoughtful discussion to help participants better understand how horses naturally experience the world around them. Unlike traditional clinics that often begin with technique, this Masterclass begins where every horse begins: With experience. Together we explore how horses perceive their environment, communicate through emotion, respond to pressure, build confidence, and navigate the relationship between their natural instincts and the domesticated world we ask them to live within. Throughout the experience, participants are invited to observe, ask questions, work together, solve problems, and discover practical ways to become a better bridge between the horse's lived experience and our own. More than learning a methodology, participants begin learning to see the world through the horse's eyes. Because once we better understand how horses naturally experience life, everything else begins to make more sense. Every Masterclass is thoughtfully adapted to the audience, making each event a unique learning experience while remaining true to one guiding belief: It is our responsibility to understand the horse's nature, not their responsibility to understand ours.
Coaching With Kerry
Private Partnership Coaching Clinics
Sometimes the most meaningful learning happens one horse at a time. While many educational experiences are shared with larger audiences, these private coaching clinics offer horse owners the opportunity to spend focused, one-on-one time exploring the unique partnership they share with their horse. Hosted by riding schools, boarding facilities, equestrian organizations, and private farms, each coaching clinic is designed around a series of individual sessions, allowing every horse-and-rider partnership to receive personalized evaluation, thoughtful discussion, and practical coaching tailored to their own goals and circumstances. No two horses are exactly alike. Neither are the people who love them. Rather than following a predetermined lesson plan, every session evolves naturally around the needs of the partnership. Together we may explore communication, competition preparation, confidence building, rider intention, obstacle course design, environmental awareness, training observations, or simply spend time discovering new ways to better understand the horse. Each session is professionally filmed, allowing participants to review the experience afterward while receiving additional observations and personalized recommendations to continue their learning long after the clinic has ended. Whether I'm coaching from the saddle, the arena rail, or quietly observing from the sidelines, my purpose remains the same: Helping people better understand the horse while strengthening the partnership they share. Private Coaching Clinics may be organized as one-day or multi-day educational experiences and can be thoughtfully adapted to the needs of the host facility, organization, or group.
Live Demonstrations
Learning Through Observation
Some of the most meaningful learning begins simply by watching.
These interactive demonstrations bring ideas to life through practical, real-world examples that allow audiences to observe the horse from a different perspective.
While demonstrations often complement keynote presentations and educational events, they also stand comfortably on their own, making them an ideal educational experience for organizations seeking an engaging arena-based program without a classroom presentation.
Working with horses in hand or under saddle, we explore how horses perceive their surroundings, process and interpret their environment, communicate through behavior and movement, and interact with the environments we create for them. Throughout each demonstration, audiences are encouraged to observe, ask questions, and discover practical ideas they can immediately begin applying within their own relationships with horses.
This isn't about putting on a show.
It's about taking a view from the hoof and discovering how a better understanding of the horse can strengthen communication, confidence, welfare, and partnership.
"Sometimes the greatest lesson is simply learning what to look for." ~ Kerry M. Thomas
Equine Immersion Experiences
Learning Through Place, Nature & Culture
Some of the most meaningful lessons aren't found inside a lecture hall. They're discovered by walking the same landscapes, experiencing the same environments, and exploring the same cultures that continue to shape the horse. Working alongside equestrian destinations, conservation organizations, luxury hospitality partners, ranches, tourism organizations, and educational hosts, I enjoy helping create immersive learning experiences where travel, nature, culture, and horses come together in meaningful ways. Whether observing wild horses, exploring historic horsemanship traditions, experiencing equestrian safaris, visiting remarkable horse destinations, or simply sharing thoughtful conversations beneath an open sky, every experience is designed to help participants slow down, observe more carefully, and better understand the horse through the places and environments that continue to influence them. Each destination offers its own story. Together, we discover how the landscape, the culture, the people, and the horse become part of the same conversation. These experiences may include keynote presentations, guided discussions, field observations, demonstrations, educational workshops, collaborative learning, or simply meaningful conversations inspired by the place itself. Every journey is purposely designed around the people, the horses, and the unique character of the destination. Beyond leading these educational experiences, I also enjoy collaborating with equestrian destinations, luxury hospitality partners, tourism organizations, and conservation initiatives to help create meaningful equine-centered experiences that enrich the guest journey while remaining true to the horse. Whether developing a new educational program, consulting on an immersive guest experience, or serving as an educational host and guide, my goal is always the same: Helping people understand horses as nature created them, so they can thrive in the world we've created for them. Because the very best memories are shaped when the experience becomes the destination.
Let's Build Something Together
Every event has its own story to tell. One of the things I enjoy most is working alongside organizers to create educational experiences that feel authentic, meaningful, and memorable for the people attending. Sometimes that means a keynote presentation. Sometimes it's a seminar, workshop, demonstration, panel discussion, or a multi-day educational experience. And sometimes the best ideas are the ones we create together. Rather than arriving with a predetermined program, I enjoy learning about your audience, your goals, and what makes your event unique. Together we can shape an experience that feels natural, engaging, and true to both your vision and the horse. Whether you're planning an intimate gathering for a local riding club, a university lecture, a conservation initiative, an international conference, an equestrian destination experience, or something entirely new, my goal remains the same: Helping humans understand horses as nature created them, so they can thrive in the world we've created for them. If you have an idea you'd like to explore—or even just the beginning of one—I would be delighted to begin that conversation.
