"Bridging the Gap Between the Natural Herd Dynamic and the Domesticated World"
For more than three decades, Kerry M. Thomas has dedicated his life's work to helping humans better understand horses as nature created them, so they can thrive in the world we've created for them. An internationally respected researcher, educator, keynote speaker, and author, Kerry is recognized for developing original frameworks that advance our understanding of equine psychology, behavior, welfare, breeding, learning, communication, and performance. His work explores the horse from the inside out, examining how horses perceive, interpret, regulate emotion, build relationships, and respond to the environments we ask them to live and perform within. Rather than asking only what a horse does, Kerry's work begins with a different question: Who is this horse? That pursuit has led to the development of a growing body of original work, including Behavioral Compatibility Analysis™ (BCA), Behavioral Genetic Architecture, Sensory Soundness™, the Emotional Engine, Group Herd Dynamics (GHD), Individual Herd Dynamics (IHD), Competitive Duration™, Athletic Intelligence, and Environmental Fluency. Together, these interconnected frameworks provide a practical approach to understanding the horse's internal operating system while strengthening both equine welfare and athletic performance. Kerry's work has been applied internationally across Thoroughbred racing, breeding, sport horse disciplines, education, welfare, research, and private consultation. He has contributed to the evaluation and development of elite equine athletes competing at the highest levels throughout the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Europe, and beyond, while also working alongside horse owners, breeders, trainers, veterinarians, universities, organizations, and industry leaders who share a commitment to advancing horse-centered understanding. Known for blending the art of horsemanship with the science of nature, Kerry is frequently invited to present keynote lectures, educational clinics, symposiums, universities, and international conferences where his work encourages audiences to rethink how horses experience the domesticated world. His research has also contributed to broader conversations surrounding behavioral genetics, equine welfare, communication, leadership, and performance across virtually every equestrian discipline. Kerry serves as an official Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Partner with the North American Saddlery School and is accredited by the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation (KNHS) as an educator. His work has been featured by leading media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Arabian Horse Magazine, Barefoot Horse Magazine, Bit & Cap, and numerous international publications. Through his books, educational programs, Position Papers, Learning Library, speaking engagements, and continuing research, Kerry remains committed to one guiding mission: Bridging the Gap Between the Natural Herd Dynamic and the Domesticated World. Helping humans understand horses as nature created them, so they can thrive in the world we've created for them.
