A Different Way of Seeing the Horse

For nearly four decades I have dedicated my work to studying how horses experience the world.
Not simply how they behave, but how they perceive, how they interpret, communicate. How they learn. How they regulate emotion and build relationships. How they manage stress and prepare to perform.
People often tell me that I "translate the equine mind."

In many ways, that is true.
But my work extends beyond understanding behavior. It seeks to understand the horse's lived experience and to explain how that experience shapes every decision they make. We all know what horses are. My work is devoted to discovering who each horse is.

Every horse possesses a unique Behavioral Identity shaped by their Behavioral Genetic Architecture, expressed through their Emotional Engine, organized by Group Herd Dynamics (GHD), directed through Individual Herd Dynamics (IHD), and experienced through the efficiency of their Sensory Soundness™.

That internal operating system influences far more than behavior. It shapes learning, communication, welfare, resilience, compatibility, athletic development, breeding potential, and performance itself.
When we begin to understand the horse from the inside out, everything changes.

Understanding Before Instruction

Much of modern horsemanship begins by asking what we want the horse to do.
My work begins by asking a different question:
Who is this horse?

Every decision we make, whether breeding, training, competing, transporting, managing, rehabilitating, or simply spending time together, affects a horse whose mind continues to operate according to the laws of nature.
The better we understand those natural laws, the better we can build environments where horses are not simply managed, but understood.
That is where meaningful welfare begins, where authentic partnership begins and where lasting performance begins.

Science Guided by Nature

Over the years this pursuit has led to the development of a growing body of work that includes:

  • Behavioral Compatibility Analysis™ (BCA)

  • Sensory Soundness™

  • Behavioral Genetic Architecture

  • Emotional Conformation

  • Group Herd Dynamics (GHD)

  • Individual Herd Dynamics (IHD)

  • Competitive Duration™

  • Athletic Intelligence

  • Environmental Fluency

These are not separate theories.
They are interconnected ways of understanding the same remarkable truth:
The horse has never stopped being who nature created.
Together they form a practical framework used by breeders, trainers, veterinarians, riders, welfare organizations, educators, universities, and performance professionals around the world to better understand the horse before asking the horse to understand us.

A Global Conversation

Today I have the privilege of sharing this work with audiences around the world through keynote presentations, universities, educational institutions, international symposiums, equestrian organizations, professional breeding programs, private consultations, and performance industries spanning virtually every discipline.

Whether working with wild horses, family horses, elite sport horses, or Thoroughbred racehorses competing at the highest levels in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Europe, and beyond, the question remains the same:
Who is this horse?
Because every horse deserves to be understood before they are expected to perform.

Your Journey Begins Here

This website is an invitation.

  • An invitation to explore a different way of thinking.

  • A different way of observing.

  • A different way of communicating.

  • A different way of honoring the horse.

As you continue through these pages, you'll discover educational programs, Behavioral Compatibility Analysis™, research, articles, lectures, clinics, books, field studies, and practical resources developed to help you better understand the horse from the hoof up.

Whether you are a breeder, trainer, rider, veterinarian, educator, researcher, welfare advocate, or someone who simply loves horses, I invite you to walk this journey with me.

Together, we can continue building a future where understanding comes before instruction, welfare stands beside performance, and the wisdom of nature continues to guide the world we create for the horse.

Take your view...from the hoof.

Helping humans understand horses as nature created them, so they can thrive in the world we've created for them.

For nearly three decades, Kerry has walked this road alone, building, teaching, and sharing the emotional and behavioral science that connects horses and humans at their deepest levels. What began as a personal calling has become a global movement, now recognized by the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation, universities, and equestrian professionals around the world.
